However, several sections of the website ask the user to provide reasonably necessary information that will be used to facilitate communication between the user requesting that communication and the fieldtripEarth staff:
- Contact ftE invites the user to provide a name, basic descriptive information and an email address. None of that information is required. Name and email information is requested only in order to personalize the our response to the contact request.
- Article Request requires that the user provide a name and email address. This allows us to contact the requestor should we have any questions about his/her article request. The name is collected in order to personalize the response.
- Log files are used to collect some computer-related information, including IP addresses and other technical variables. An “IP address” is a number that identifies a particular computer so that data can be transmitted to it from the website. “Environmental variables” include, among other things, the user’s domain, the time and date the user accessed the website, the browser (and operating system and platform) used, and the names of the fieldtripEarth pages that user visits. This information is used for making certain technical decisions about the site, and is not tied back to a particular individual.
