OBX Sea Turtles (2015) – Nest #6
Nest #6 – 30 June 2015 – Kill Devil Hills NC
At the same time as Nest #5 was being enjoyed in Duck, the Kill Devil Hills nesting responders had quite a different nest to examine. Each nest site is different, but this one was especially unusual. The female turtle made two body pits. There were a few eggs laid near the top of the nest, then 11 broken eggs beneath them. The “real” nest was just below the broken eggs. It was a super shallow nest and had to be moved. Most loggerhead nests are 18-22 inches below the surface of the sand. The broken eggs were not placed in the new nest. They would contaminate the nest and their odor might draw predators to the nest.
