OBX Sea Turtles (2015) – Nest #3
Nest #3 – 23 June 2015 – Nags Head NC
Dennis Pohl, the Dream Team captain, found this nest. We will never hear the end if this! You can tell that this was a loggerhead when you look at the crawl in the sand. A loggerhead alternates flippers when it swims and crawls—kind of like a freestyle swim.
An egg was collected for the DNA study and, since the nest was well above the normal high tide line, the nest was covered up, marked off and left in situ. Loggerhead eggs incubate for 55-80 days. We will begin sitting out at night watching for the hatching of this nest on Day 55. If this is a hot summer, the turtles may develop faster and we may therefore begin sitting out before Day 55.
