OBX Sea Turtles (2015) – Nest #15
Nest #15 – 15 July 2015 – Nags Head NC
Many NEST volunteers worked hard to raise money for a new ATV. With donations from generous friends and businesses, a bright new red ATV (now known as “L’il Red”) was purchased for the Nags Head Dream Team. They got the new one not because they are leading the turtle nest race but because their ATV was in dire need of replacement.
NEST Hotline Coordinator Jerry Alexander made the first beach run on L’il Red and found Nest #15 in south Nags Head NC. Since each nest is different, finding the eggs can be an adventure. As you can see in the picture in the right-hand column, it took several tries before the eggs were found. We usually make an educated guess as to the actual position of the eggs, but we have to dig 18-22 inches into the sand looking for the eggs. Sometimes we find them on the first hole, and other times we have to do a lot of digging. We always wear rubber gloves to protect the eggs from our bacteria and ourselves from bacteria the eggs may have.
The response team did not have to relocate this nest so they just measured it, marked it off and celebrated. Now they have to just wait 55 days to begin the nightly vigil for a hatching. If this warm weather keeps up this summer, we may have nests hatching before Day 55.
