2006 marked the 38th year of ongoing field studies by the University of Tennessee (UT) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) on black bears (Ursus americanus) in the northwestern portion of Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). As in previous years, our research activities focused on estimating population abundance through live-capturing bears and monitoring reproduction by visiting winter dens of radio-collared adult female bears.
